The  reliability of our products makes me superior

"We machine all the toolholders here at the Lauffen site using our SCHUNK PGN-plus-P gripper. As well as meaning we can work very efficiently, it also allows us to gain practical experience using our own products every day."
Tamara Laslo, Head of Production in the field od tooholding, SCHUNK GmbH & Co. KG, Lauffen a. N.

The Story

By the time head of production Tamara Laslo arrives at work in the morning at SCHUNK in Lauffen, the machining center she is responsible for has already been working all night, lathing and milling steel blanks to form the basic shape of a toolholder.

The entire process is highly automated, like many things at SCHUNK, and is performed by two industrial robots featuring modular grippers. For this purpose, the automated system is equipped with SCHUNK's own 2-finger parallel grippers PGN-plus-P, among other things. "This system works pretty much on its own for 24 hours a day here. My colleagues and I only have to intervene in the process very rarely. It is especially important for us to be able to rely fully on every individual component. Of course, this also applies to the grippers we deploy," explains Tamara Laslo, who is in charge of this area. Every shutdown reduces productivity and slows down the manufacturing process. Due to consistent automation and the perfectly coordinated system made up of a machining center, robots and SCHUNK components, the time required for the production of a toolholder at this site could be significantly reduced.

SCHUNK equipped by SCHUNK
SCHUNK also consistently relies on the benchmark gripperPGN-plus-P for production of other components of course, enabling the gripper series to be tested directly under tough practical conditions and thereby continuously improved. "I have to take care of a lot of individual details for our automated systems. I do not have to worry about the grippers." They have lasted longer than the machine tool itself, added Tamara Laslo with a smile, who has been with the family-owned company from Lauffen for 18 years.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
The entire series is impressive, not only due to the patented, high-precision SCHUNK multi-tooth guidance, but also because of a number of other technical details such as the unique permanent lubrication feature of the PGN-plus-P. The gripper series' comprehensive portfolio includes small component-, universal-, large-stroke- and heavy-duty grippers, as well as dust-tight grippers for the safe and precise handling of workpieces under demanding ambient conditions.

Depending on the application, the possible workpiece weights range between a few grams and several kilograms. The scope of applications that can also optionally be equipped with sensor technology or components with magnetic switches ranges from standard robot applications to automation solutions in cleanrooms and hazardous working areas. The combination of customer-oriented support and service, global availability and over 30 years of experience means that SCHUNK can offer all of its users this kind of complete and impressive package.
