Engineering, motion, and sensor systems for productive automation

Engineering and automation from one source: SCHUNK will showcase new linear direct axes from the SLD family – the SLD Mini and SLD Midi – at the SPS 2026 in Nuremberg. Through the combination of gripping technology, sensor systems, and engineering, we create productive automation solutions – ranging from individual linear axes to integrated applications.

SLD EGK Depaneling The gripper for small components, electric EGK handles parts with precision at the depaneling machine on an SLD linear direct axis. The combination of gripping technology and dynamic linear motion enables compact, automated handling processes.

Automation becomes productive when individual technologies work together reliably and can be seamlessly integrated into existing processes. This is exactly where SCHUNK comes in: With axis systems, electrical components, gripping technology, sensor systems, and comprehensive engineering expertise, the company supports users from the design phase all the way through to a production-ready solution. The range of services extends from standardized components to validated assemblies and systems, including custom-designed solutions for specific industrial requirements. Whether electronics, e-mobility, automotive, life sciences, aerospace, or defense: SCHUNK will present practical applications for various industries and production environments at the SPS.

Markus Hanselmann, Product Manager for Gripping Technology & Automation Technology at SCHUNK, says: "From the axis to the application, we demonstrate how individual components come together to form automation systems that operate reliably in production. To do this, we combine motion, gripping, sensor systems, and engineering. And our customers quickly move from the initial idea to a production-ready application."

Motion takes center stage

SLD-Mini Produktbild SCHUNK is expanding its range of axes for dynamic assembly and handling processes with the new SLD Midi and Mini linear direct axes. Their compact design allows for highly dynamic properties in a small installation space.

A good example of this is SCHUNK's linear direct axes, which will be the centerpiece of the trade show presence at the component level. They provide motion in automated assembly and handling processes and serve as a modular foundation for a wide variety of applications – from single-axis systems and pick & place units to pre-assembled multi-axis systems.

With the new SLD Mini and SLD Midi, SCHUNK is expanding its family of dynamic and high-load linear direct axes to include new models. The drive and path measuring system are directly integrated into the compact axes, enabling fast, space-saving motion sequences without additional interfering contours. Accelerations up to 100 m/s² and speeds up to 5 m/s ensure short cycle times. This makes the axes suitable for high-speed applications in electronics manufacturing, e-mobility, and life sciences, for example.

A variety of structural and motor sizes makes it possible to tailor the axis systems specifically to load capacity, dynamic performance, and installation space. SCHUNK thus positions itself as a motion partner for a wide range of industrial automation tasks.

Components are combined to form an application

SCHUNK demonstrates how motion can be transformed into a production-ready solution using additional automation components. Electric grippers, swivel modules, and force-torque sensor systems complement the axis technology with functions such as gripping, turning, and process monitoring. In collaboration with SCHUNK Engineering, this results in assemblies and systems suitable for integration, tailored to the specific application.

Digital support for simpler automation

Digital and AI-based technologies also help to implement automation tasks more quickly. The 2D Grasping Kit, an AI-powered application solution, facilitates the automated handling of unsorted components, for example. Digital tools provide support right from the planning phase: using the product finder, linear axis and axis system configurator, users can select the right components and design axes tailored to their specific applications.

At the SPS, SCHUNK will demonstrate how components, motion, sensor systems, digital support, and engineering can be combined into a comprehensive package – with the goal of accelerating the transition of automation from a technical possibility to stable production.
