The "WorldSkills" vocational competition is known for its high standards and global reach. This year, 1,400 top professionals from around 70 countries and regions competed in 64 professional disciplines to put their skills to the test. The German team was represented in Lyon by 44 specialists and took part across 39 disciplines. Their performance impressed the judging panel: the German national team won a total of 31 awards, including one gold, five silver and three bronze medals as well as 22 medals of excellence, including the one won by Julian Gelo.
With this award, Julian Gelo has been recognized as one of the best young talents in his field. "This medal makes me proud and happy," said Gelo after the award ceremony. "The intensive preparation has paid off. The competition was strong and it feels great to have been honored with the Medal of Excellence for my performance."
In the discipline of CNC turning, precision, technical understanding and craftsmanship are put to the test. Felix Seidel, CNC trainer at SCHUNK, was on site at the WorldSkills 2024. "Julian Gelo and all the other participants did a great job. Their successes show that we are very well positioned in terms of international comparison. The medals of excellence are proof of the high level of performance of vocational training in Germany," emphasized Seidel.
Team Germany impressed with an excellent overall result and ranked 9th in the world in the medal table. This reflects the high level of vocational training in Germany. With his medal of excellence, Julian Gelo is now a role model for the next generation of CNC lathe operators.
WorldSkills takes place every two years in different parts of the world. The organizer focuses on professional skills, with both national and international competitions. A medal of excellence is awarded to all outstanding performers who just missed out on a medal placing.
